What is Menarche?

white Wavy Divider

A girl's first period is called menarche (pronounced: MEH-nar-kee), and it's an important milestone!

It's completely normal for women and girls to feel some discomfort in the days leading up to their periods. This is often referred to as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Many girls and women experience a mix of physical and emotional symptoms during this time, including:

  • Acne
  • Bloating
  • Feeling tired
  • Backaches
  • Sore breasts
  • Headaches
  • Changes in digestion (constipation or diarrhea)
  • Food cravings
  • Feeling a bit down or moody
  • Irritability
  • Trouble concentrating or dealing with stress

Typically, PMS can feel the strongest during the week before a period starts and tends to fade once it arrives.

During the first few days of their period, many girls also experience cramps. These are caused by prostaglandins, which are chemicals in the body that help the uterus contract. These cramps can feel dull or sharp, and their intensity can vary.

It's important to remember that it can take up to 2 years after menarche for a girl's body to settle into a regular menstrual cycle as it adjusts to the hormones that come with puberty. On average, an adult woman's menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can range from 23 to 35 days. Embracing these changes is a part of growing up!
