What Is Fertility Awareness?

Fertility awareness is a natural approach to help you manage pregnancy planning. Whether you’re looking to prevent pregnancy or hoping to conceive, this method involves paying attention to your body’s signals around the time of ovulation — which is when an egg is released during a woman’s monthly cycle. You might also hear it called natural family planning, periodic abstinence, or the rhythm method.

How Does Fertility Awareness Work?

If you want to avoid pregnancy, the key is to avoid having sex during the ovulation period. To do this, couples track when ovulation occurs. Tools like calendars, thermometers to check body temperature, observing cervical mucus changes, or using ovulation prediction kits can be really helpful. These kits are especially great for those trying to conceive since they help pinpoint the best time to maximize chances. The fertile window lasts about 6 to 8 days, so if you’re using fertility awareness for birth control, it’s best to avoid intimacy during that time.

How Well Does Fertility Awareness Work

While fertility awareness can be useful, it isn’t foolproof. About 24 out of 100 couples who rely solely on this method may experience an unplanned pregnancy within a year. It can be a bit tricky to know exactly when ovulation occurs. Women can actually conceive for several days before ovulating and up to a couple of days afterward. Since teens often have irregular periods, predicting ovulation can be especially challenging. It requires some dedication, including tracking body changes, recording daily observations, and, importantly, abstaining from sex during those fertile days.

Does Fertility Awareness Help Prevent STDs?

It’s important to note that fertility awareness doesn’t provide protection against sexually transmitted infections (STDs). If you’re sexually active, it’s always a good idea to use condoms to safeguard against STDs, even if you’re using another birth control method.

When Should I Call the Doctor?

If you’re using fertility awareness and experience any of the following, it’s wise to reach out to your doctor:

  • You think you might be pregnant
  • You notice changes in the smell or color of your vaginal discharge
  • You have unexplained fever or chills
  • You’re experiencing pain in your belly or pelvic area
  • You feel discomfort during sex

Remember, your health and safety always come first!
